Well done to the team at Allsops Space for another successful day at auction.
The total sales achieved through auction hit €12,495,500. 73 of the 88 lots that went under the hammer on the day (seven lots were withdrawn and five failed to reach their reserve prices) achieved in excess of their reserve price so the figure for just the excess was € 3,181,000.
It was another beautiful day outside The Shelbourne, somehow, auctioneer Gary Murphy manages to bring the sunshine with him each trip, regardless of the season (he clearly doesn’t travel on Ryanair!). The good weather no doubt contributed to the huge numbers in attendance. While many were there to watch, there was plenty of cash floating around the room. Once again, it was a multi-cultural affair but, as always, Irish cash buyers were the main winners on the day.
Protesters outside the hotel are becoming a familiar sight, however, their presence was felt inside too as an orchestrated protest took place at the start of the auction and at several stages through out the day. The auctioneer was interrupted on a number of occasions while going through the initial formalities of the process. Throughout the first lot, bidding was consistently interrupted, however, a staff member from Space discretely escorted the loudest protester outside.
Another incident occurred during the auction of Lot 24 – 1 Drumliffe Drive, Cabra, Dublin 7 where the reserve price of €100,000 was exceeded and €122,000 achieved before the winning bidder disappeared. The lots was re-offered within the next 15 minutes and sold for the original reserve price with a direction from the auctioneer “if you are going to bid on a property here today, please do not run away”!
One of the good news stories of the day was certainly the Sandhouse Hotel in Donegal, where the winning bidder, Mr Paul Diver, was the manager of the hotel for 20 years! We wish Paul and his team every success and will be sure to arrange a trip to Rossnowlagh Beach soon.
One of the disappointments of the day was the withdrawal of the much-hyped cottage in Leitrim, with the reserve price of €7,500. The property is privately owned and the owner simply had a change of heart on the day.
